When i short circuit my 1991 yamaha fzr600's starter solenoid...?

I bought a 1991 yamaha fzr600 as a project bike. The gas tank was off but i wanted to just make sure it would turn over. So, I charged the battery, then used a screwdriver to short circuit the starter solenoid, and the starter motor started. The starter button on the handlebar wouldnt do it, so what is wrong with my bike? What do i need to do to make it run? Also, when i put the gas tank back on, will it start right up, or what do I have to do to get it to run?
