Gas Fireplace, turn the switch and nothing happens?

I recently bought a 5 year old home and it has a gas fireplace that turns on by turning a switch on the wall. I turn the switch and nothing happens. There is electricity running and everything seems to be hooked up right but will not turn on. I can't seem to find a handyman that knows anything about these systems so I need your help.
