Good enough plot or not?

Your plot has a lot of potential. There are some strong themes, and it creates a question that most people will want to have answered. Just work on your characters and don't rush through to fill your plot. Remember, sub-plots can add so much to a story if they are used correctly and with deft hands that they'll make up for anything that might seem "hard to believe" in your work.
